The delta variant of Covid-19 appears to be loosening its firm chokehold on the United States. Since Sept. 1, daily new cases have dropped by 50 percent. Hospitalizations and deaths, which lag behind new infections, are also decreasing. (Dr. Jalal Baig, 10/27)
As a physician in a Covid-19 care unit, I celebrate the vaccines as one of medicine鈥檚 greatest triumphs. They provide extraordinary protection against severe disease and death, and are the world鈥檚 best option for returning to a more normal life. As a scientist and lead investigator for a study on Covid-19 immunity, I have also come to appreciate the significance of so-called natural immunity acquired by those who have had Covid-19, and the power of 鈥渉ybrid immunity鈥 鈥 the protection gained when such people also get vaccinated.
